Persian Star

Persian Star is sired by champion sprinter and sire of sires Star de Naskra and out of the prolific stakes producing mare Link Bracelet. (See below for a link to Persian Star's pedigree at CTHSBC.ORG) He is a half brother to champion Artic Son (by Son of Briartic), multiple stakes winner of $501,049 and to Wianno (by Waquoit), stakes winner of $145,410 (and producer of stakes placed La Salle Glory (by Lit de Justice) $309,278) and two other stakes placed half siblings. Persian Star is a stakes placed multiple winner of $91,515. His four wins were at 6 1/2 furlongs, but his stakes placings were up to 1 1/8 miles, showing his versatility, and ability to take his heavily speed dosed pedigree a distance. He raced successfully from 2 until 7 years old, with his 5 yr old year off for tendon problems. With major and multiple stakes production from each of the female members of his family, his third dam Iberia stands out as broodmare of the year in the USA in 1971, the dam of Riva Ridge, champion 2 yr old in the USA, champion older horse in the USA, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont among 17 stakes wins on his way to earning $1,111,497 back in the days when earnings of a million or more was even more of an accomplishment than it is now.

From a few small crops of foals, Persian Star has produced five winners of eight races from eight starters with earnings of over $80,000. His first crop of foals are foals of 2001. Young stock can be seen at our farm. Winners in 2006 were the impressive "Star Guy", bred, owned and trained by Jarmo Koskinen, who did not race at all until this year at five years old, and was not even broke until he was four. Star Guy won his second of two starts this year with ease, picking his way through the pack like a seasoned campaigner and pulling away by several lengths with apprentice jockey Jason Pong at Hastings Park.

Also winning twice in 2006 was our own home bred four year old filly "Star Coral" (out of the War Deputy mare Marion Reef). This powerful, blocky filly is just a pleasure to do everything with, always well mannered, quiet and classy, and all serious business on the track. Ridden by Mario Velasquez, she comes from just off the pace with a solid late run for her victories.

Win by Coral Star, Hastings Park, November 2006.

Star Coral also free jumps beautifully and naturally, tight and square knees with a lovely arc and will make a child's or ami hunter at some later point in her life. Star Coral will run again in 2007 as a five year old with no soundness issues or problems. In 2007 we also expect to see several other youngsters make their first starts, Kinda Special, a three year old gelding out of the Wander Kind mare Kinda Striking, and Star Jasmine, a three year old filly out of the Clever Trick mare Broadway Musical. Also in the three year old crop and racing in 2007 are Royal Roxstar, (out of the Son of Briartic mare Royal Roxanne), C Star, (out of the Flying Paster mare Miss Lisa C) and Miss Vimy Ridge, out of a Vying Victor mare. In the two year old crop of 2007 we have Lobstar, Wandrin Star, Mistarryize (racing in Manitoba), unnamed filly out of Royal Roxanne (racing in Manitoba), Avalanche of Stars (in Alberta), Starflash and Sea N Stars.

Persian Star's disposition is exceptional. He lives as any regular horse does, plays with his gelding friends who live next door, no isolation for him. He is gentle and respectful of humans, and safe to work around and handle. He is well mannered during breeding, and kind to his mares. Sending your mare to Persian Star is the equivalent of sending her to the holiday spa resort, for romance with the handsome tennis pro. All mares clamor for his attention. He is such a relaxed horse that mares who are not in heat and ready to breed hold little attraction for him, and mares hope that they are coming into heat soon when they meet him. Persian Star is extremely fertile, and we have had good luck getting mares in foal who have failed to conceive with other stallions or through AI techniques.

Persian Star sired thoroughbreds have the advantage of not only racing for their owners, but have an after racing value as show horse prospects. From his first crop, the unraced gelding Highway Star is already competing in the low hunter and jumper divisions.

Persian Star also has part TB foals heading for hunter/jumper disciplines, the dressage arena, and for three day eventing. Persian Star's second dam, Barranca, produced the dam of several top hurdlers and steeplechasers in France, Brodi Dancer (7 wins 3 to 6, $391,420 Grand Steeplechase de Paris etc.) and Jete Battu, the family of Byzantium and Bal des Ifs, also major contenders over the jumps in Europe. Persian Star himself jumps beautifully, square and tight with his knees and with a lovely natural arc, so it's not surprising that his foals are also showing this talent. Unfortunate racing injuries have denied Persian Star himself a show career, but he free jumps readily at home showing his style. Persian Star's pedigree also lends itself to the show jumping breeder, tracing back to the perennially top jumping lines of Nearco, Vieux Manoir, Balladier, Tudor Minstrel, Turn To, Royal Charger and Hyperion, Hoist the Flag, as well as the lesser known Thinking Cap (also seen in the ancestory of the brilliant east coast USA hunter Rox Dene). These ancestors are found in most of the top jumping horses of either thoroughbred or warmblood breeding, and are the source of jumping talent for both these breeds.

Owners and breeders of Persian Star offspring are delighted with their character, trainability, work ethic, athleticism and eagerness to learn. The Persian Stars are running, and jumping, pleasant in the barn and all business with ability when called upon, so that they are often the trainer's, exercise rider's and barn staff's favorite. We have breeders return with their mares in following years, they are so happy with the earlier editions. Treat yourself to raising a Persian Star foal.

You may view Persian Star's PEDIGREE (PDF file, statistics updated through November 12, 2007) at CTHSBC web site (Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, BC division).
